Meet the Maker at Madison Soap Company

Posted by Laura Daly on

I woke up this morning thinking about this image. This was taken when I first started making soap. I felt so proud of myself, knowing I had learn a new skill. Then, I think about how far I've come. At this point in time, I was a single mom trying to figure out how to do it all on my own in a country I hadn't lived in for 5 years. Soap making took a general feeling of powerlessness and turned it into empowerment. This is what it means to be a maker, to create something that didn't exist before. In a world of screens that keep on scrolling and a news reel that is constantly changing, the act of making things from scratch is oh-so satisfying. To take raw materials, use one's creativity to decide how they will be concocted and then make something all your own is such a great feeling.

This is an early day of inspiration on this journey. Today I think about how far I've come. I have learned SO many new things; how to formulate soap, how to make a line sheet, adobe illustrator, how retail stores work, good manufacturing practices, how to use iMovie, Shopify and so many other things! I've also had the opportunity to meet a lot of other makers in the Madison community. That might be the biggest bonus of all.

I can't help but want to share both the experience of learning new things as a maker and getting to meet other makers in my community. That is why I am starting two new ventures this summer and I'm so excited to tell you about them!

I am starting a podcast highlighting local makers in the Madison area. There are so many makers with amazing stories out there that need to be heard. The goal of the podcast will be to promote local business and also to collaborate with them on this website to bring you unique products or opportunities you can't find anywhere else.

The second project I am working on is online courses teaching soap making for beginners. This is the project that led me to learn iMovie. So fun! To accompany these courses, I will also be offering soap making kits for specific types of soap with everything already measured and ready to go for you.
